Spoleto USA music director resigns

Spoleto Festival USA music director Emmanuel Villaume announced his resignation Monday, effective at the close of this year’s festival.

Villaume announced his decision Monday at the annual Spoleto Board meeting, his closing remarks occasioning a standing ovation.

“When I came here I was full of energy and ideas … and fear,” said Villaume. “Charleston and the festival helped me build my confidence.”

Villaume will devote himself to his twin posts as chief conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in the Slovak Republic and artistic director/chief conductor the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Slovenia.
