SC treasurer race: Little-known office holds important seat

Posted on June 2, 2010 at 1:45 am

In the race between two Republican candidates for what is essentially the state’s chief financial officer, South Carolina Treasurer Converse Chellis touts experience and skill, while challenger Curtis Loftis questions the incumbent’s spending and work habits.

Like the comptroller general’s contest, the race is crucial because the treasurer sits on the five-member State Budget and Control Board that manages the state’s budget. The treasurer also helps oversee state spending, runs the state retirement system, heads a state bank board and works with credit agencies that rate the state’s debt.

The winner of the June 8 GOP primary will face no major party opposition in the November general election.

Both candidates say they favor spending caps and using a budget method where any increase in state spending would be matched by a spending decrease elsewhere.
