Patricia Huggins composes herself as she describes how a tree ripped through her roof, damaging much of her home on Truman Street during Monday’s storm. “It felt like an earthquake,” she said. Huggins said lightning also hit the home, cracking one of the walls in the living room.

Columbia, S.C. – July 9, 2008 – The 1994 Honda Accord tops the list of most commonly stolen vehicles in South Carolina for 2007. The Hot Wheels 2008 study, released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, shows that South Carolina car thieves are targeting a wide range of popular passenger vehicles as well as pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Older model vehicles remain a popular target for car thieves.

While vehicle theft has continued to decrease nationally, South Carolina has seen the number of stolen vehicles remain steady with more than 23,000 vehicles reported stolen in the metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) around the state last year. Myrtle Beach has the highest number of vehicles reported stolen in the state and ranks number 23 in the country.

Man attacked, killed following hit and run

http://www.thestate.com/136/story/449918.html

A passenger in a vehicle involved in a hit and run accident was attacked and killed, officials with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department are reporting this morning.

The attack happened after three people were hit by a vehicle on Nancy Avenue at about midnight.

Police later responded to a call where the passenger of a vehicle was found unresponsive after being attacked, reportedly by family members of one of victims.

The driver of the vehicle, believed to be a woman, fled, reports indicate.

The identity of the passenger who was killed is not known, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said. An autopsy has been scheduled.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the hit and run. One state trooper was injured while trying to move the vehicle from the roadway.

Other details were not immediately available.
